Professor Deepak Nayyar
Professor Deepak Nayyar is Emeritus Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where he taught Economics for 25 years. He is an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, and was, until recently, Distinguished University Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research, New York. Earlier, he has taught at the University of Oxford, the University of Sussex, and the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. He served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi. He was Chairman of the Board of UNU- WIDER, Helsinki, and on the Board of Directors of the Social Science Research Council in the United States. His professional life in academia has been interspersed with time in the world of public policy, as Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India and Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He served as a Member of the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation, and as a Member of the National Knowledge Commission in India. He was also Vice President of the International Association of Universities, Paris, and Vice Chairman of the South Centre, Geneva. He has published fifteen books and numerous articles. His latest book, Catch Up: Developing Countries in the World Economy, was published by Oxford University Press, Oxford, in 2013.
Dr. Akmal Hussain
Dr. Akmal Hussain is an economist, author and social activist. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Economics, Forman Christian College (A Chartered University), Member, Governing Board, South Asia Centre for Policy Studies (SACEPS), and Senior Fellow, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE). He was Adviser to the Federal Government of Pakistan on economic policy as Chairman, Working Group on Institutions for Development, Panel of Economists and as Chairman of the Working Group on Poverty Reduction for Pakistan's Tenth Five Year Plan. Dr. Hussain has helped build organisations for overcoming poverty at the village, district, provincial and national levels in Pakistan. These include the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) at the national level and Punjab Rural Support Programme (PRSP) at the provincial level. Apart from a large number of papers, reports and newspaper articles, Dr. Hussain has authored three books on development policy and has co-authored 29 other books on issues of poverty, peace and development, which have been internationally published.
